How to Scan Documents With the iPad Notes App

Beginning with iOS 11, Apple added scanning capability to the Notes app. With it, you can capture a document and save it to your iPad in PDF format. Here’s how:

After the Scan

After you save the document as a PDF, you can do anything with it that you can do with a regular note or PDF. Tap the scan to open it and use the tools in the top right corner to crop, rotate, use markup, print or share the document. In iOS 11 and iOS 12, tap the plus sign (+) to launch the camera for the scan.

If your iPad runs on iOS 10 or earlier, the Notes app doesn’t include scanning capability, but you can download one of the many scanning apps that are available for this purpose. They include:
