CNBC reports that Craig Federighi talked about Mac malware during a court appearance on Wednesday for the Epic Games v. Apple trial. Federighi said that the tech giant is not happy about the amount of malware that exists on macOS, as far as the company’s expectations for itself goes. “Today, we have a level of malware on the Mac that we don’t find acceptable and that is much worse than iOS,” Federighi said in his testimony in court. According to CNBC, he said that Apple found and removed about 130 different kinds of malware on Mac devices last year. Federighi also cited the 2020 Threat and Intelligence Report by Nokia in his testimony. According to the report, iOS devices accounted for 1.72% of mobile malware infections, compared with 26.64% for Android and 38.92% for Windows. The report states that the top 10 most dangerous malware is responsible for 50% of infections on Android devices. The newest 2021 iMac devices have a new M1 chip, which Apple says provides better security than previous iMacs. According to the Apple Platform Security Guide, Macs running the M1 chip now support the same degree of protection that iOS devices provide. Apple said the M1 chip makes it harder for malware or malicious websites to exploit your Mac. However, Wired reports that hackers have found a malware tailored to run on M1 processors, so may still want to install antivirus applications on their new Apple computers.
