This new option for Apple Watch users is intended to make it easier to pass through Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints at participating airports. According to Apple’s announcement, airports that are taking part in the program will have specific checkpoints and lanes set aside to accept IDs via Apple Wallet. When available, you’ll be able to add your State ID to your Apple Wallet in a similar way to adding a credit card. You’ll need to scan your ID card, take a selfie, and perform a series of facial and head movements for added security. Once the ID has been verified by the issuing state, you can use it at participating TSA checkpoints by tapping your iPhone or Apple Watch at the identity reader. Once prompted, you’ll just have to authorize access via Face or Touch ID to release the information. “We are excited that the TSA and so many states are already on board to help bring this to life for travelers across the country using only their iPhone and Apple Watch,” said Jennifer Bailey, vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, in the official announcement, “and we are already in discussions with many more states as we’re working to offer this nationwide in the future.” Apple Wallet ID storage will come to Arizona and Georgia residents first, with Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah to follow. No concrete dates have been given for when the new feature will begin rolling out, but an iOS update for it is expected later this fall.
